Back in October last year we tipped Welsh songwriter J Francis’ new moniker Hotel Del Salto. With tons of support following the release of ‘Bigger Than Elvis’ we caught up with the man himself to discuss his plans for 2017.

1.Firstly, for those who are unfamiliar with your work, how would you describe your sound?

You can sometimes end up sounding a bit of a clown describing yourself, but I’d say adventurous pop, I love melodies and hooks but also I want to put out music that people haven’t quite heard before.

2.We featured you on The Tipping Point a while back, what have you been up to since?

I was out in in Texas for six weeks before Christmas and also I’ve been producing my next single (‘Stand For Your Right’) which has just had its first play on Radio Cymru. Done a few live DJ sets and also been working on a potentially exciting collaboration, so been keeping things busy!

3.In terms of your career so far, how long have you been writing and performing as an artist?

Hotel Del Salto has been in the pipeline for a few years now. I think I had a slight fear of finally taking the plunge and just putting the music out into the world, but now I think I’m at a ‘to hell with it’ stage. Music should be fun otherwise what’s the point?

4.Would you say you prefer recording in the studio or playing live?

Being in the studio is one of my favourite places and I haven’t actually gigged yet, so easy choice. Plus there’s something oddly satisfying about spending a day in there noodling around for eight hours and it turning out being a spectacular waste of time

5.What is the most difficult challenge for you in the music industry?

I think it’s basically just competitiveness and the sheer amount of music which is being made, that can make it hard. But then again that’s another reason to be ambitious and try to put out quality stuff.

6.What is your biggest musical achievement to date?

The debut single was out late last year so it’s still early days… but getting support from BBC Radio Wales/Cymru and airplay on Radio 1 was a big boost. The reaction in general to ‘Bigger Than Elvis’ I’ve been really bowled over with.

7.When can we catch you playing live next?

Hopefully soon, the wheels for the live Hotel Del Salto experience are in motion haha. I think these days realistically you have to play live and I think it could be a fun show.

8.Do you have any new material due for release soon?

My second single ‘Stand For Your Right’ has just come out and it’s the poppiest/weirdest tune I’ve written so far.

9.Do you have any industry related advice for emerging artists?

In general I think you should just focus on what makes you unique and go from there and do your own thing. You obviously have to push and promote yourself but at the same time if you’ve got a bit of magic about you then you should get your rewards.

10.What’s the best way for people to get in contact with you/keep up to date with the latest goings on?

Facebook and Twitter are still the big ones for that; I probably enjoy Instagram the most so check that out too:

11. What is your one major ambition for your career in music?

I’d love to put out a record that becomes somebody’s favourite album or something. As a music nerd that would give me a real kick! That and becoming bigger than Elvis obviously.
