Viola Beach describe themselves as ‘a really lovely 4 piece indie pop band from Warrington’, musically their new song ‘Swings & Waterslides‘ could be described in the same vein.

The single is a strong introduction into the fiercely competitive indie-pop boy band world. It begins with a neat crossover of bass and patterned guitar that echoes the earlier days of Foals. Vocally the band are reminiscent of Artic Monkeys with the same devil may care, charming northern voice. Lyrically more on the softer, more innocent side but it blends with the catch and anthemic chorus.

Indie boy-band comparisons aside Viola Beach have done well at mixing pop and indie to a higher level, without it becoming unbearable. It’s a valiant effort from the quartet considering this is their debut single. It’s safe to say this won’t be the last time you hear about them.
